Fieldbus specialist Hans-Ludwig Göhringer
“Operator error is virtually eliminated
Hans-Ludwig Göhringer, a seasoned fieldbus expert from Holzgerlingen in Germany, was one of the first to try out the new PROFIBUS Tester 4. In addition to on-site troubleshooting services, he regularly provides fieldbus training courses and heads a PROFIBUS International working group. In the interview he talks about the new tester:

Mr. Göhringer, what makes the new PROFIBUS Tester 4 different from all other testers?
Up until now I used to use several, separate testers for troubleshooting. Now I need just one. I don’t even have to take my notebook along everywhere. What is also very important in my line of work is to provide detailed test reports and handover documents as a reference for subsequent maintenance work. For this, the new Profibus tester delivers precisely reproducible test results for the signal quality of all bus devices. That’s something no other tester can do. My special focus is on EMC, so I highly appreciate that the unit features appropriate electrical isolation. Speaking from my own experience I cannot stress enough how important it is to use a bus tester with electrical isolation.

What advantages do you see for troubleshooting in general?
It takes just one click in the PC software to start testing, so operator error is virtually eliminated. This way even less experienced users can now finally carry out full, qualified tests. And that, in turn, makes remote diagnostics a lot easier for fieldbus experts like me. For example, it will often save us travel time and cost. Another point is that it used to be very difficult to find very rare faults because you had to permanently keep a notebook at the test location. Now, with the standalone mode, you can carry out long-term tests without a notebook.

What is your overall opinion on the new PROFIBUS Tester 4?
While people keep talking about Profinet etc., the majority of installations actually still use Profibus. And it looks as if Profibus will continue to be the most widespread fieldbus for a while – which means that it also has to be maintained throughout the lifetime of the installations. I am therefore very happy that a greatly improved Profibus tester is now available to make troubleshooting faster and more efficient. The possibility to test both bus physics and bus communication at the same time reveals completely new interrelations. In my opinion, the PROFIBUS Tester 4 will quickly become the all-in-one tool for troubleshooters like me and for maintenance staff.
